In the last month, as hundreds of protests have sparked a national conversation about the movement for Black lives, gig companies like DoorDash, Postmates, Instacart, and Uber have been quick to release corporate PR statements opposing racism.
But over a month later, what have they actually done to support their own Black gig workers & address the racism their own companies perpetuate?
The answer: very little. That's why Black gig workers are holding an #AppBlackOut to raise up their demands for gig companies:
Create a pay standard of at least minimum wage + expenses, with a default tip of 20%
Stop using potentially biased customer ratings to penalize workers
Stop refusing jobs to workers based on arrest/traffic records with no impact on work
Create a way for gig workers to report discrimination from businesses & customers
From July 24 - 26, you can help raise up Black gig workers' demands by participating in the #AppBlackOut.
If you're a gig worker, log off for the weekend & refuse to work on all gig apps. If you're a customer, don't order app-based delivery or use any of your gig apps for the weekend.
